When you use your computer you want to be able to see and hear what is going on. Therefore, the computer must have devices to allow this to happen. Two examples of these devices are sound cards and video cards.

Sound cards- allow you hear the sounds from programs. Usually they need to have speakers or head phones plugged into them. A typical sound card is the first image below.

Video Cards - these allow images to be displayed upon your monitor. You monitor plugs into your video card. The plug-in area on the card pictured below (bottom image) is the blue plug toward the upper left-hand corner.
