Modems and Ethernet Cards

In order for your computer to connect to other computers and the internet it usually uses one of these types of cards.

Modems- These are what are most commonly used in homes. The speed new modems run at is 56K. Modems use your phone line by dialing up a server which allows you to connect to the web. Modems use phone cords and often have 2 jacks. This can be seen by the first image.

Ethernet-This type of card is used in many businesses and schools. These type of cards allow the computer to connect to a network with faster speeds. The two speeds common at this time are 10Mb or 100Mb. An ethernet card will have only one jack and this jack will be larger than the jacks on the modem. An ethernet card requires a special cord. The ethernet card is the second picture shown.
