CSCE 488, Spring 2003
HOMEWORK 1
Assigned: Wednesday, January 15, 2003
Due Date: Wednesday, January 29, 2003
Purpose: This assignment will serve as a prerequisite test and, at
the same time, provide practice on technical reading comprehension and
bibliogrpahic searches.
You are to mail
two files to to Prof. Scott by 11:59:59 p.m. on the due date.
One file is a single pdf file
that contains all your results
(see Help on Creating pdf Files for tips on
this). The other file is the filled-out
survey, which can be submitted in Word or pdf format.
Read carefully the paper "Cramming More Components onto Integrated Circuits,"
by Gordon E. Moore, Electronics, Volume 38, Number 8, April 19, 1965.
Then do the following exercises independently. Submit
well-documented solutions in pdf format.
- Write an abstract: After you finish reading the paper, describe in your
own words the content of the article, limiting yourself to eight
sentences. (Refer to the handout "Geological Notes" before doing this part.)
- How many predictions were given in the introduction of the paper and
how many have been fulfilled since?
- Give two examples that prove the conjecture made in the paper true.
Limit yourself to one paragraph for each example.
- Using the INSPEC database, accessible from UNL Libraries'
IRIS system,
search for the journal papers on the
Moore's Law made popular by this paper, since 1995. Submit the list as an
appendix to your submission.
- Using the Research Index (Citeseer), find
five most recent papers (from any source: journals, conferences, or technical
reports) that apply, evaluate, or extend Moore's Law. Submit the list in
attachment to your solutions.
