Subject: Lisp lectures

Hi,

As Prof. Choueiry mentioned, I will be giving lectures/help-sessions on the use of emacs and Lisp.  These should be fun (really) and even if you don't need Lisp for the constraints class, it will be very helpful if you plan on taking AI, doing research with Prof. Choueiry or just having fun with different styles of coding.

The exact time has not been worked out, but I'm thinking of starting this Thursday night at 7pm and talking for 1-2 hours (including at least one or two breaks), depending on people's needs.  I'll guess at this point that Ferguson 112 is the default for this Thursday, unless I can get room 21.

If this is a bad time, please let me know what night is best for those wishing to attend, and which is impossible--I'll adjust as I can.  To keep my email from overflowing, please try to show up Thursday or have a friend show up and vote for a good lecture time.

My first talk will cover (more or less):

    (*) what Lisp is
(*) what kind of coding you can do with it
(*) how to get a copy
(*) the best editor to use
(*) how to get the editor and set it up
(*) what the HyperSpec is, and how to use it
(*) where to get extra information, free code, etc.
(*) a set of examples to get you used to how Lisp appears
(*) basic data structs and function calling

Depending on interest and the time available this semester, I'll try to get into data I/O, the macro system and whatever people find interesting.  I'll try to go fast at first just so people get an idea of what they want to learn (and to help you *before* you need to crank out code!), and then concentrate on specific topics.

Thanks,

Eric
