CSCE476/876: Homework 1  (HW1)

Who and how: getting to know the environment
Given:           Monday, Jan 10, 2000.
Due dates:   Task 1:  Tuesday, Jan 11, 2000 before 6 p.m.
                      Tasks 2 & 3:  Thursday, January 13, 2000 before 6 p.m.

Task 1:  Tell us who you are.
Communication will carried out via a mailing list to avoid duplication of efforts and provide a uniform and equal support to everyone, to the extent possible. Messages to the instructor and TA should be sent to cse476@cse.unl.edu.  Messages to the whole class should be sent to cse476-ml@cse.unl.edu.  Send an email message to cse476@cse.unl.edu with the following information: (1) First name, (2) LAST NAME, (3) student id, (4) major, (5) grad/undergrad?, (6) email address, and (7) physical address (in case we need to contact you.  This could be your mailbox in the department if you check frequently enough).

You are requested to use handin to turn in Tasks 2 and 3.  If you don't know handin, read the man pages on cse.unl.edu. Task 2: Go through the entire tutorial of Emacs,  and execute it step by step.
We will be using Allegro Common Lisp through the Emacs editor.  Emacs is a general text editor with a particularly good interface with Allegro Common Lisp.  Start Emacs by typing "xemacs &" from a shell window in Linux (or from a drag menu).  The on-line tutorial can be obtained by typing "ESC-x help-with-tutorial" or by printing the same file stored for your convenience.

Task 3:  Start Allegro Common Lisp on the PCs under Linux.
Save the file .emacs into your home directory on the PCs.
Start xemacs, and start ACL by typing "ESC-x common-lisp".
Write a file with the Exercises 2-3 to 2-10 (i.e., 8 exercises) from NewChapter 2 in LWH, and evaluate each expression in the ACL window.
Save the results into a file and New submit the file using handin.
