Message from the Workshop Chairs

It is a great pleasure to welcome you to the third IEEE International Workshop on Wireless Sensor, Actuator and Robot Networks (WiSARN 2011).

This workshop covers the field of wireless sensor, actuator and robot networks. Sensor networks consist of small sensor nodes which are embedded in the physical world. Their task is to monitor certain physical phenomena and to report their measurements to data sinks. While sensor networks just observe the physical world, recently it has been recognized that it would be beneficial to augment such networks with actors. Actors may be simple static actuator devices (e.g., sprinklers) programmed to take immediate, one-shot, action in response to sensory input, or sophisticated entities such as mobile robots that are able to make complex decisions and take appropriate actions on themselves, sensors and/or the environment.

In response to the call-for-papers, this third edition of the workshop received 27 high quality submissions, coming from different countries all around the globe. The program committee selected 16 papers for presentation at the workshop. The accepted papers cover the topics of mobility management, localization, topology control, data communications, data aggregation and collection, localization, and performance evaluation and experimental study.

The technical program committee consisted of 30 experts covering many of the different aspects of wireless sensor, actuator and robot networks. Each paper was carefully reviewed by at least two program committee members. Most submissions received three reviews, which were all collected electronically, and carefully revised by the program chairs. We appreciate the outstanding work performed by our TPC members, as well as the support from the IEEE INFOCOM 2011 organizers and committees for their help in dealing with final papers, copyright forms, and workshop registrations.

We hope you enjoy the workshop.
