Welcome Message from the Workshop Organizers

One behalf of the Organizing Committee of the Third IEEE International Workshop on Network Science for Communication Networks, it is our pleasure to welcome you to Shanghai, China. Drawing upon the knowledge base of many established disciplines, Network Science is emerging as an important new discipline with applications in a variety of domains such as Communication Networks, Power Grid Networks, Transportation Networks, Social Networks, Biological Networks and Economics. Design of complex communication networks of the future needs a deep understanding of the interplay between the physical- the communication- and the social networks involved. An understanding of such interdependency can only be achieved by closer interaction between Network Scientists, Communication Network Designers, and Social and Behavioral Scientists. The goal of this workshop is to a provide a forum where this diverse group of researchers can meet and exchange ideas that will lead to deeper insights into the design of robust, efficient and complex communication networks of the future.

Following the success of the first and the second workshops in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, and San Diego, California, respectively, we received thirty-three submissions from all across the globe. Although, originally we planned to accept ten papers for presentation, the distinguished members of the Program Committee, after careful deliberation, selected thirteen papers for presentation at the workshop. The authors of these thirteen papers are from nine different countries, making the workshop a truly international one. The quality of the submissions was high and this enabled us to present a program that is strong in its technical content. The topics covered by these papers encompass a significant part of the intersection of Network Science and Communication Network research. We believe that you will find the papers both interesting and informative.

We wish to thank all members of the Program Committee for doing an excellent job of reviewing the papers. We would like to thank all the authors who submitted papers to the workshop for their support. We would like to thank our keynote speakers, Prof. Don Towsley of University of Massachusetts at Amherst and Prof. Ariel Orda of Technion, Israel. We would also like to thank our sponsors, Tom Sawyer Software of Oakland, California and the U.S. Army Research Office for their generous support of the workshop. In particular, we would like to thank Mr. Brendan Madden, President and CEO of Tom Sawyer and Dr. Robert Ulman, Program Manager of Army Research Office for their support. We would also like to express our very special thanks to our students, Mr. Sujogya Banerjee and Mrs. Shahrzad Shirazipourazad, without whose help many aspects of the workshop would have been incomplete.

Finally, we would like to welcome the workshop participants to Shanghai. The city offers a multitude of cultural and recreational activities to its residents and visitors. We encourage all the workshop participants to take advantage of the trip to Shanghai.
