IEEE INFOCOM 2011 Workshop on M2MCN-2011
Welcome to Shanghai and to the P. R. China. Welcome to the 15th April IEEE INFOCOM'2011 workshop on Machine-to-Machine (M2M) Communications and Networking. Ever since its conceptual birth in 1998, the topic of M2M is increasingly gaining in popularity in both industrial as well as academic circles. The reason is because more and more machines and objects are being connected wirelessly and expected to operate for many years autonomously in an energy efficient manner, whilst not disturbing the other services supported in the same access network. Whilst in the early years of M2M, the cellular and capillary M2M designs have evolved separately, first joint architectural designs are being put forward as witnessed by latest ETSI M2M developments. This and many other stringent design requirements bring along challenges which are currently being addressed by the community, e.g., in ETSI M2M, 3GPP dealing with MTC, the first large R&D project on M2M ICT EXALTED, among others. The papers published in this workshop represent a sampled set of these problems and how they can be addressed. We do expect many more contributions to emerge on M2M in coming years in this workshop as well as other fora.
The workshop team thanks the authors for helping in making the M2MCN the premier international workshop in this area. It is your contributions and your active participation in the workshop that enable its success and impact. We are also honored to serve as the general co-chair of this landmark workshop of M2MCN, in conjunction with INFOCOM. INFOCOM 2011 is an exciting combination of first-rate technical papers, focused workshops and tutorials on state-of-the-art topics. We hope you will take full advantage of the program. We would also like to thank the INFOCOM Workshop Co-Chairs, Chunming Qiao and Ivan Stojmenovic, for their great support! Moreover, we have had the pleasure of working with a great team, who in turn worked with you, to create the exciting workshop program. The Technical Program Committee co-chairs, Nirwan Ansari and Weiyi Zhang, have worked with the rest of the Technical Program Committee to create a fantastic technical program covering the latest advances in this fast-moving area of M2M.
