Those that lead…

June 26th, 2006

So this week I’m acting as a tutor/mentor/tour guide for a group of 3rd year Japanese middle school students from Senshu Matsudo Middle School.

Yesterday I took my group on a tour of the UNL City campus. The main problem with the tour was that it was Sunday, so everything was closed and I felt like one of the crapiest tour guides ever. After the tour and lunch we took them on a tour of the area around the campus. This consisted of the Nebraska State Capitol and the Museum of Nebraska History. After an hour break it was time for dinner, which, from the get go, had all kinds of problems. First was getting all 144 students to the restaurants in the Haymarket, 72 went to Fireworks and the other 72 went to Lazlos. Next was getting all of the orders done and then correct and then properly billed. The main problem is that everyone paid individually, hard enough when everyone speaks the same language, but when the majority know very little english it’s just that much harder.

So, on Tuesday afternoon everyone is going to the Henry Doorly Zoo which should be awesome. Tag in the jungle anyone? On Wednesday we’re going shopping? And on Thursday afternoon we’re going to Grand Island for anothe museum and a cook out of some kind. So, there’s a lot going on this week and it should all be fun.

The Students Maybe On Their Way Back

July 7th, 2006

The students should by now be on their way back to japan and the rest of their lives. It was fun just being able to use some Japanese that I haven’t used since I was in Japan. I may not run into them again but some of the other guys that did the same thing will when they return to Japan in the fall when they intern as assistant English teachers at Senshu-Matsudo.

Their interning has set me on my own want of going back to Japan. Right now it’s the only place that I really want to be. When I first went there last fall I was all video games and other such crap. When I got there I found many other things outside of the standard geek things that interested me. You know when you’re really interested in a place when all you want to do is wander around the streets, not really expecting anything.

It’s been awhile

It’s been over a year since I last posted and I don’t care. I don’t think I’ll really ever do a lot of posting so don’t expect any.
